Spiritual Direction - A ministry of Presence in the ordinary
When we refer to Spiritual Direction as a ministry of presence in the ordinary, we mean that Spiritual Directors are trained and passionate about creating a non-anxious space (Presence) in which you can process what is going on in your soul in the context of your everyday (Ordinary) life.
A spiritual director, in its most basic definition, is someone who holds prayerful space for someone else.
We might be better viewed as contemplative companions in our role as spiritual directors. We're less interested in directing you to whatever wisdom we've gleaned. We are much more interested in providing the kind of environment that allows you to discover wisdom.
There are only a few places where the soul is truly safe. A place to be welcomed, attended to, and heard. A different place than those where the soul is evaluated and judged.
It is not our job as spiritual directors to fix something that is broken or to make something happen. We insist that something is already happening, and that God is already doing good, beautiful, and holy (even if difficult) work in the lives of those who seek spiritual direction.
As a result, the director's role is simply to assist the directee in accurately noticing God's work and responding to it vigorously, joyfully, and habitually over the months of a person's journey. The director joins the directee in the search for God's fingerprints.
While spiritual direction is journey–centered rather than healing–centered, the growing awareness has healing and sanctifying effects in the life of the directee.
